Tutorial: Gold Text Effects in Photoshop CS4

Artistic typography is one of the hottest trends in site design and something that many designers and developers will want to integrate into projects.

This video tutorial will show you how to create a gold text effect using Adobe Photoshop CS4. This effect can add a nice visual typographical element to site graphics. Overall, this tutorial is aimed at web developers who may know PHP, Rails, or JavaScript, but who are new to graphic design and want to expand their skill sets.

First, I will show you how to use the Text tool in Adobe Photoshop to create the text that you will be using for this tutorial. I will also explain the process that Adobe Photoshop uses to simulate bold fonts. After creating the text, I will immediately open the Blending Options for my new text layer. In the Blending Options dialogue box, I will show you how to add a gradient overlay to your text to give it a gold color. I will then show you how to use the Bevel and Emboss option to give your text a three dimensional metal look. I will go through the different options for beveling and embossing and show you how to get the desired effect for the gold text.

Finally, I will show you how you can add an inner glow to give your gold text an extra bit of sparkle. Once all the effects have been applied to the text, I will show you how you can quickly and easily duplicate this effect on other text layers or objects without having to recreate the effect for each instance.

To duplicate an effect, you will hold "ctrl" and "alt" while dragging the effect from layer to another. By the end of this tutorial you should know how to use different techniques in Adobe Photoshop CS4 to create the aforementioned gold text effect.

This will be the first in a series of tutorials dealing with various text effects that can be applied to web banners, promotional material, or even product development materials.
