By some estimates there are more than 12,000 active web stores running the osCommerce open source platform, making it one of the most popular shopping carts.
Developers are often drawn to osCommerce for client and company projects because of its extensive user community, which includes more than 200,000 coders and owners; and its more than 5,000 extensions that upgrade the administration panel, integrate with payment processors, or even hack the platform to track workouts or weight loss—which is a great extension for a health and fitness retailer.
To help demonstrate osCommerce's flexibility, I have put together a list of osCommerce-based sites that run the gamut in web design and development. The platform does have a reputation for minting cookie-cutter, bland stores (I looked at more than 3,500 live store to find these examples), but it is clear that osCommerce can support visually interesting sites, too.
