One of the hottest site-design trends is large, embossed typography. Understanding how to both create this effect and seamlessly apply it to a number of background styles and colors can be a useful skill when developing an ecommerce site.
In this video tutorial, I will show you how to apply a simple embossing effect to typography in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
First, I will demonstrate how to create some embossed text that uses a simple, dark, grayscale background. To begin, I will show you how to select a font that will work well with the embossing effect. Next, I will show you how to add a Gradient Overlay, Drop Shadow, and Inner Shadow to give your text an embossed look.
With the first embossing effect applied to the text, I will show you recreate the effect using colors similar to the background. There are a number of helpful tutorials on recreating this effect. However, many of them fail to address the issue of changing color schemes. I will show you how to add a light, grayscale background to your text, with the blend mode set to Multiply, to ensure that the emboss effect will stay consistent with the background color.
With the text set up properly, I will demonstrate the same Drop Shadow and Inner Shadow effects used in the first set of embossed text. I will also explain how setting up your text to change with the background color scheme allows you to experiment with multiple backgrounds without having to recreate the text effect with each change.
By the end of this tutorial, you should have a better understanding of the techniques used to create a stylish embossed text effect in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
