Yesterday, Facebook announced several updates to its development platform, including the ability to add application tabs to profiles so that users can easily access an application later.
"Add to Profile Button"
Essentially, Facebook now allows application developers to include an "Add to Profile Tab" button in an application or website to prompt Facebook users to add an application tab to their profile. In an ecommerce environment this might mean that a developer could create a "Deal of the Day" application and encourage a site visitor to add the application to her Facebook profile.
Developers working with Facebook's JavaScript API can use either the FB.Connect.showProfileTabDialog or the fb:add-profile-tab XFBML tag (<fb:add-profile-tab></fb:add-profile-tab>) to render the "Add to Profile Tab" button.
Developers working with Facebook Markup Language (FBML) will use the Facebook.showProfileTabDialog or the fb:add-profile-tab FBML tag (<fb:add-profile-tab />) to render it.
This new feature could mean that Facebook users will be much more closely tied to their favorite applications.
