The Art of Illustration Building, Part 3

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been showing you how to replicate the beautiful illustration of the home page at IconDock. In this final installment, I will show you how to complete the illustration and add in some last minute finishing touches.

To begin, I will show you how to copy and paste a set of icons into your illustration document to begin placing on your canvas. I will then show you how to place each of your icons in a seemingly random pattern that will leave you with a stunning flying icon look.

With all of your icons properly placed, I will show you how to add outer glow effects to specific icons to give the illusion of depth throughout the illustration.

Next, I will show you how to lay in the heading, text and button for the illustration and how the rest of the illustration can be manipulated to work around the text.

With everything finished in Illustrator, I will show you how to make some last minute adjustments to the Photoshop document that was created in Part 1 of this tutorial series. By adding and adjusting the background areas around the cardboard box, I will show you how to create a shadow effect that emphasizes the illustration's lighting.

Because I originally used the File > Place feature in Illustrator to import my Photoshop document, any changes I make to my .psd file in Photoshop will automatically be updated in Illustrator when I save.

By now the illustration should be complete and you should have a better understanding of how to create detailed Illustrations using both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS4.
