Twelve Hours of Ruby on Rails Video

Ruby on Rails is the popular server-side development platform powering well-known applications like Shopify, Twitter, and even Ecommerce Developer. Increasingly, it is the language and structure that developers are turning to get projects up and running quickly.

In this article, I have assembled 12 hours of introductory Ruby on Rails (RoR) video, aimed at providing a basis for learning the basics about the platform and providing launching off points for further areas of inquiry.

Ruby on Rails—One-Day Course:

In August 2007, the University of California, Berkeley presented a one-day course on RoR. The lectures featured Armando Fox, an adjunct associate professor, and Will Sobel, a professional RoR developer.

Ultimately, the one-day course provides a great basic understanding of RoR. Resources associated with the course, including the PDF versions of the slides, are available from Berkeley.

What follows are all of the videos from the one-day course.

Part 1: Hello World 1:15:15

Part 2: Just Enough Ruby 1:35:17

Part 3: Basic Rails 1:42:28

Part 4: Advanced Active Record 50:29

Part 5: AJAX and Testing 59:09

Part 6: Configuration and Deploy 55:57

The Coderpath RoR Screencast Series

Coderpath was an awesome podcast series that launched in late 2006 featuring hosts Miles K. Forrest and Curtis McHale. As far as I know, the series is no longer in production, but it was top notch, to say the least. Coderpath also developed three RoR screencasts that included special guests David Heinemeier Hansson, Amy Hoy, and Ryan Bates.

I have assembled all three for you here, or you can watch them in higher resolution on the Coderpath site. Also, listen for the barbershop quartet that sings the RoR introduction.

Ruby on Rails an Introduction

Originally published right here on Ecommerce Developer, Scott Meade's introduction to RoR is still one of the best-received post on our site. The video runs just 6:54, so there is a lot of information packed into a little time.

RailsConf 2010

In June 2010, O'Reilly Media hosted the RailsConf event in Baltimore, Maryland. The well-attended event included discussions around Rails 3.0, coding, and some statements regarding the future of Rails. I have selected two of the best videos associated with the conference. Yehuda Katz's video is especially encouraging if you are trying to contribute more to the Rails community.

Railscasts

With more than 220 episodes at the time of writing, Railscasts is the longest running continuous RoR screencast series I know of. Watch every episode, and you cannot help but learn the platform. For this article, I have embedded Railscast 1, which runs 1:57.

MVC and Models in Ruby on Rails

This one is another of our own RoR screencasts that I especially like because of its focus on the model, view, control (MVC) architecture that is at the heart of the Rails platform. This video runs 9:11.
