Over the past two weeks, I have been taking you through the process of designing a high quality iPhone illustration in Adobe Illustrator. In this episode, I will be finishing this tutorial series with the final installment, where I will show you how to design the iPhone “Lock Screen.” Part 1 and Part 2 of this series we previously published.
To begin, I will show you how to mask off a background image of your choosing using a duplicate of the LCD screen shape.
Next, I will show you how to create the semi-transparent “glass” elements found at the top and the bottom of the lock screen using a cropped rectangle with a glossy gradient as its fill. I will also show you how to add one-pixel black lines to each of the glass elements to give them an added element of detail.
Next, I will show you how to add the time and date text, adding a subtle drop shadow to each. I will then show you how to recreate the “slide to unlock” slider found at the bottom of the iPhone lock screen.
Finally, I will show you how to group together the lock screen elements to isolate them from the rest of the iPhone illustration. By grouping the lock screen design, you can easily hide it and add your own custom display on the iPhone to best suit your needs.
By the end of this tutorial series, you should have a better understanding of how to design an iPhone illustration in Adobe Illustrator. Hopefully, this will help you create additional mobile device illustrations.
