Sometimes the simplest techniques can bring out the greatest results in a design. In this video tutorial, I will be showing how to create a paint splatter element out of a diagonal line pattern in Adobe Photoshop CS4 that can add a lot to a design.
To begin, I will show you how to create and set up a new document to best complement the lined paint splatter element. Next, I will introduce you to the image I will be using to create my layer mask and bring it into my document.
After importing the paint splatter image, I will show you how to create a group of equally spaced lines that will fill the canvas and act as my texture. With the lines created, I will show you how to rotate and position them before applying the layer mask.
With all of the elements in place, I will demonstrate how to isolate the paint splatter portion of the image using a color selection technique in Photoshop. By selecting and deleting the highlights of the image, I am left with a paint splatter shape that can be applied as a mask.
Once the layer mask has been applied using the paint splatter shape, I will show you some final tricks for modifying and customizing both your pattern and your layer mask.
This technique can be used to create many design elements, not just a grunge design, and is helpful any designer's arsenal.
By the end of this tutorial, you should have a better understanding of how to create a masked pattern design element in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
