W3C Release HTML5 Logo, Badge to Promote New Web Tech

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has released a new "unofficial" logo for HTML5 as part of a awareness campaign seemingly aimed at promoting HTML5 and CSS3 support in the development community.

"The HTLML5 logo goes beyond simply representing the HTML5 spec to embody the technology, and the open web movement, at its core," wrote Ocupop, the agency that designed the logo, on its website.

The logo is to be used on developers' sites and projects, and even features a number of technique-specific icons that let the world know what aspects of the HTML5 specification are in use. The idea is that both the logo and icons can call attention to the rich interactivity and improved performance HTML5 promises.

"Imagination, meet implementation. HTML5 is the cornerstone of the W3C's open web platform; a framework designed to support innovation and foster the full potential the web has to offer," the W3C said, explaining what the aforementioned icons represented. "Heralding this revolutionary collection of tools and standards, the HTML5 identity system provides the visual vocabulary to clearly classify and communicate our collective efforts."

HTML5 has enjoyed strong support from leading browser makers and has caused quite a stir over its potential to challenge Adobe Flash for some of the web video share, if issues over the H.264 codec and its apparent open source replacement, WebM, don't get in the way.

Yet the specification has also been associated with some confusion, which this new W3C logo program could clear up, since it is specifically pointing to individual HTML5 technologies.

Finally, the HTML5 logo and badges may be a good way for web developers to brand their businesses. If savvy clients learn to recognize this seal, it could make a difference in how many inquiries developers receive.
